Understanding loans maths

Instalment loans — personal loans, consolidation loans, most secured borrowing — all use one formula: a fixed payment sized so the balance reaches zero on the final scheduled date. These calculators expose what that fixed payment hides, which is how much of it is interest and how long the debt actually lasts.

The most useful thing you can do here is model an overpayment. Even a modest extra amount each month attacks the principal directly and can remove months of interest from the end of the schedule.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the rate and the APR?

The interest rate prices the borrowing itself. APR folds compulsory fees into a single annualised figure so two offers can be compared. Enter the rate to model payments, and compare APRs when choosing between lenders.

How much does paying extra really save?

Every extra dollar reduces the balance that future interest is charged on, so the saving compounds. The loan calculator shows the revised payoff date and the interest avoided next to the standard schedule.

Are there penalties for early repayment?

Some agreements charge an early repayment or break fee, which the calculator does not know about. Check your credit agreement before overpaying a large amount.

Why does my quoted payment differ slightly?

Lenders differ on day-count conventions, fee capitalisation and rounding. Differences of a dollar or two per month are normal; large gaps usually mean a fee has been added to the principal.
