Understanding auto maths

Car finance is usually negotiated on the monthly payment, which is exactly why buyers overpay: a longer term lowers the payment while raising the total cost. These calculators show both figures at once.

Sales tax, dealer fees, a deposit and a trade-in all change the amount actually financed. Model them together before agreeing to a payment on the forecourt.

Frequently asked questions

Is a longer loan term cheaper?

Only per month. Stretching the term adds interest and increases the period during which you owe more than the car is worth.

How does a trade-in affect the loan?

A trade-in reduces the financed amount in the same way a deposit does, provided the vehicle is owned outright. Negative equity rolled from an old loan increases it instead.

Should sales tax be financed?

It can be, and the calculator lets you include it. Financing tax means paying interest on it for the whole term.

Does this include running costs?

No. Insurance, fuel, servicing, tyres and depreciation sit outside the finance payment and often exceed it over a full year.
