Insurance term

Policy

The insurance contract itself

Definition

The written contract between the insured and the insurer, comprising the schedule, the general terms, and any endorsements.

In more detail

Definitions inside a policy override everyday use of the same words. A term such as 'accidental damage' means what the definitions section says it means, not what it means in conversation.

Where documents conflict, the schedule and any endorsement usually take precedence over the base wording, but the order of precedence is stated in the contract.

Glossary entries are general explanations, not advice. Where a term appears in a contract or policy, the definition in that document governs.
